I went with brushed nickel Schlage levers through my whole house. Picked up a couple passage levers, and few privacy lock levers, and three keyed entry levers plus some deadbolts which I haven't got installed yet.
We really like the look and feel of these. They're solid and definitely a big step above our old Kwikset knobs that were throughout the house. There's just one thing that is holding these back of a five star rating from me. And it's not really a bad fault, but it can be pretty annoying if you don't use your head. It's the "emergency exit" feature of the lever. Now I'm not an idiot. I get it, I understand why it's there and I think it's a pretty nice thing to have. But here's the problem. We're getting rid of these old knobs that were locked from inside and out when you locked them. These levers don't do that. When you lock them, they are locked from the outside but not from the inside. They will open just as normal even if it is in the lock position. What makes this a little more harder to get used to is the lock you turn from the inside is backwards from what we're used to. At the horizontal position the lever is locked. And, as you might guess, when it's vertical the door is unlocked. We're creatures of habit. When I open a door, and it opens, I assume it's unlocked because that's how it's been my entire life. That's not the case here. On top of that, when I look down to see if it's locked I have to stop and figure out what it means if it's currently set horizontal or vertical.
We've had three problems in not even two weeks of using these. First, a builder who's renovating our bathroom got locked in our basement after going down there to take some measurements. That wasn't bad because I was upstairs and heard him beating on the door to get out. Again, since it opens from the inside you assume it opens from the other side. Not the case.
The next problem was with the same door. We have two kids, ages 5 and (just about) 1. My youngest can reach up and grab and pull these down to open. There's not really a good product to stop them from easily doing that either. Not that I've found anyway. I really, really don't want my kid getting this open and tumbling down a flight of stairs. That would be insanely bad. But what do I do?!? I felt our basement was a place that could be broken in to due to the old windows around the foundation. That's why I wanted to put a keyed entry there. It's right next to the door to the garage and the utility door too so I wanted the same look. After talking with Schalge customer support it was clear that this was a feature that couldn't be turned off. I decided to go with a Kwikset Tustin Satin Nickel lever for just that door. It looks pretty close in size and shape. The color is spot on too. About the only difference was the round base which has a slightly different design but hardly noticeable. I checked with Kwikset to make sure it did not have this "emergency exit" feature before I bought it. It did not. So, when it's locked it's locked. It keeps my kids from getting to where they shouldn't be. And it looks pretty close to the Schlage Accent levers. One annoying thing, the lock is turned how we're used to. So when that door lock is vertical, it's locked. When it's turned horizontal it's unlocked. Exactly the opposite of the Schalage levers, one of which is right next to this Kwiskset lever on the door to the garage. Again, confusing!
And finally, the last problem I've encountered with the "emergency exit" is how easy it is to lock yourself out of your house. I've done it once already with no keys to get in. I've got the keys, they're all on the kitchen counter with labels to what door they go to. I just haven't put them on my ring yet or hid/locked any outside the house. I made it in... but it wasn't fun. Thankfully it was just my dogs inside. My wife's been worried she'd lock herself out when as she takes the dogs out leaving the kids home alone. That wouldn't be good.
It's a great lever. I like the idea of an emergency exit. I wish there was a way to disable it though. There are safety issues with children when it comes to this safety feature. If you've got small children in the house please be aware they will be able to easily open a locked door from the inside with these. Hopefully we'll never have a house fire or some other emergency where these would come in handy. Even then, when I get my deadbolts installed, it kind of defeats that a little. And I realize a deadbolt would have fixed my basement door problem, I just didn't see the need for one on that door thus the purchase of the Kwikset lever. My exterior doors (front, back, garage) will have deadbolts though.
